What was read for Storytime - Nov. 9, 2012

Miss Tegan (that's me! *waves*) covered for Miss Michelle today as she is at home sick. She's trying to get well so she can return. She's keeping us updated and we're sending "Get Well Wishes" to her. We had a great time though! The crowd today was fantastic. My "theme" was farm animals again. Here's what I read:

Barnyard Banter by Denise Fleming - JJ FLE
The farmyard is noisy today and Goose is checking it out, but where does goose keep hiding? A fun read for those who like making animal noises!

Chicken, Chicken, Duck! by Nadia Krilanovich (checked out from another library)
Duck leads the animals on the farm to a silly ending. What will it be?

Pigs to the Rescue by John Himmelman - JJ HIM
Just like last week's Chickens to the Rescue, the Pigs are now helping the Greenstalk family through their week. The only problem is, are the pigs actually helping or just making things worse?

We sang a few songs as well including "Heads, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes" (which I sped up!) and  "Old MacDonald."

Next week, Miss Michelle will be out again. There will be no story time on Monday and Friday, but the toys will be out. I'll be subbing on Wednesday at 4:30 PM.

Keep on Reading!

New Kids Reads (Nov. 9)

We have a lot of new works this week! We hope you'll enjoy them.

Lots of new books out this week (actually they were last week's books). Stop by to pick up a new title!

What was read for Storytime - Nov. 2, 2012

Miss Tegan (that's me!) subbed in story time today, but everyone who came had a great time! We read silly stories, sang songs, and some stayed after to color. Here was what I read today:

The Duckling Gets a Cookie!? by Mo Willems - JJ WIL
Wait? What? How did the Duckling get a cookie? Pigeon asks for things ALL. THE. TIME. What does he get? NOTHING. So how come this little Duckling gets a cookie? The twist will surprise you and even the very angry Pigeon. Part of the Pigeon series.

Click, Clack, Splish, Splash : a Counting Adventure by Doreen Cronin - JJ CRO
You know the Duck and Farmer Brown from Click, Clack Moo, here is a simple story with the crazy farm animals from the series. Farmer Brown takes a nap, which his animals use at the prime opportunity to go on an adventure! But what is that adventure and how are goldfish involved? Great for practicing counting up to 10 and counting down.

Chickens to the Rescue by John Himmelman - JJ HIM
Too tired to make dinner? Your watch is down the well? Who can help? CHICKENS! Yes, the farm chickens can help with your problems. The most enjoyable part of this book is the two-page spread with the chickens doing the rescuing and the recurring refrain, which children will love to shout. The ending hints at more adventures, but with who? (Book 1 of 3 I've found so far.)

We also sang a few songs including the "ABC Song," "If You Want to Hear a Story..." and "Old MacDonald's Farm" which had a pig, a duck, a cow, and a chicken.

Thank you for coming and we hope to see you at our other story times!

Election Links to Explore

The final Presidential Debate aired last night and voting is only two weeks (less than that now) away. Do you want to explore more about elections? You've come to the right place!

First, be sure to stop by and check out the display pictured to your left where we are featuring books on elections, the various parties (political parties), and books on Presidents at Blue Bell. You'll never know what you learn from a book about the Presidents or the elections.

Now, below are some kid-friendly sites that you can explore. The sites were included based on how informative they were as well as fun. Some aren't nearly as much fun as others, but the information was just too good to pass up.

For Kids

PBS Kids: TheDemocracy Project - Explore information about the election from learning about the candidates to printing posters as well as enjoy facts from previous elections by traveling the “Voting Time Machine” This is perfectly designed for kids with awesome graphics, animation, and information. (Grades K-12)

Ben’s Guide to U.S.Government for Kids - A more "wordy" resource compared to others resources out there but is a great starting point to understanding elections, how candidates become candidates, and what happens on election day. (Grades 9-12)

Time for Kids:Election 2012 - Voice your thoughts on election issues, learn about current election news, and study information about the candidates. (Grades 3-9)

Fans of infographics (those really neat images that have a start here, read fact, move on) will enjoy this page. Bite sized pieces of information explain how one becomes President as well as the election process in simple language (Grades K-5)

For Parents & Educators

These two resources link you to even more resources!

USA.Gov – Learn aboutElections and Voting: A collection of resources that the government gathered for you that you can use with your children to help them better understand the election.

NeverEndingSearch –Election Resources to Share: Another collection of resources, from a secondary level school librarian in the area, that you can use with your children to help them better understand the election. The resources collected here are more appropriate for a secondary level classroom.

Let us know if there are more links to include in the comments.
