Baby Story Time - What Was Read - May 22

Today brings the last Baby Story Time for this school year! I'll be taking a small break to get ready for Summer Reading. I invite you and baby to join our Summer Reading Club. Baby Story Time returns for a special summer time slot on Saturdays, at 10:15 from June 28 to August 2. I hope to see you and baby this summer!

Theme: Peek-a-boo!

What Was Read

• Peekaboo Baby by Sebastien Braun.- JJ BOARD BRA
• Play Peek-a-boo with different babies in this favorite lift-the-flaps book!
• I Kissed the Baby! by Mary Murphy. - JJ BOARD MUR
• The animals are excited about the baby! They all want to kiss, sing, or hug the baby. Simple illustrations and a repeating text make this a fun story.
•  Peek-a-boo! by Roberta Grobel Intrater. - JJ BOARD INT
• Bright photos, simple texts invite a peek-a-boo game and discussion of emotions.
• Peek-a-who? / by Nina Laden.:  
• Part guessing game, part peek-a-boo game.

What We Did

• Sang  my favorite opening and closings songs: "If You'd Like to Hear a Story" and "The More We Read Together."
• Sang "Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes."
• Sang "Clap/Wave/Hug Like Me" to the tune of Row, Row, Row Your Boat.
• Recited the "I Bounce/Tickle/Hug You" rhyme.

What Was Read - Morris Arboretum Story Time - April 29

The renovations at Morris Arboretum are done and we returned for Story Time! Sadly, the weather wasn't nice enough for us to go outside, so we were inside yet again. That didn't stop us though from having a good time!

What We Read

• Birds / by Kevin Henkes ; illustrated by Laura Dronzek.: - JJ HEN
• Birds come in all shapes and sizes. A child recounts the types of birds and muses on what might happen if birds left trails and more.
• Feathers / Cassie Mayer. - J 598.147 MAY
• A factual book about body coverings. This one focuses on feathers and features a guessing game!
• Up, Tall and High! : [but not necessarily in that order] by Ethan Long.:- JJ LON
• Short chapters that feature birds who illustrate concepts for kids. There are awesome flaps that add to the story! 
• Look Whooo's Counting by Suse MacDonald. - Request
• A little owl learns to count up to 10.

What We Did

• Sang my favorite opening and closing songs: "If you'd like to hear a story" and "The more we read together."
• Recited "Two Little Black Birds."
• Recited "Little Bird, Little Bird" to the tune of "Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear."
• Recited a rhyme that starts "I saw a little bird go hop, hop, hop"

Baby Story Time - What Was Read - April 3

Despite the lovely weather we had a great crowd for Baby Story Time today! It was also a fun session today because we had lots and lots of bounce rhymes! Read on to see what we did today.

Baby Story Time at Blue Bell is a story time session geared specifically toward babies (ages 6 months to 18 months). We'll read stories, sing songs, chant rhymes, and play with baby! Baby Story Time is also an event for parents and caregivers to learn about early literacy skills to help prepare baby for reading as well as to help foster a love of reading. We meet Thursdays, at 10:15 AM.

Theme: Bunny rabbits!

What Was Read

• Hop! by Phyllis Root ; illustrated by Holly Meade. - JJ BOARD ROO
• Five little rabbits go about their day in this fun, rhyming story.
• Where We Sleep by Nancy Tafuri.:  - JJ BOARD TAF
• A simple story that talks about where baby animals sleep. Fantastic for new vocabulary (like "thicket").
• Busy Bunnies by John Schindel ; [photographs by Steven Holt]. -JJ BOARD SCH
• Photographs highlight what bunnies are up to throughout a day. 

What We Did

• Sang my favorite opening and closing songs: "If You'd Like to Hear a Story" and "The More We Read Together."  
• Recited/sang: "I wish I were a bunny."
• Sang: "Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes."
• Recited the rhyme: "Little Rabbit."
• Recited the rhyme: "Me and my horse."

Early Literacy Tip

• Something I haven't talked a lot about here is Print Awareness. Aside from helping you, the rhyme cards I use every time show baby that there is something on that card that you're reading. Reading is how you can expose baby to print from pointing to parts of the book to point out the words on the page.
   

What Was Read - Morris Arboretum Story Time - April 1

Story Time at the library was no joke for April 1st! We had a small group meet at WVPL for stories and songs and rhymes about birds! This is the last Morris Arboretum Story Time at a library. We'll be back at Morris Arboretum on April 29 at 10:30 AM.

What Was Read

• Feathers For Lunch by Lois Ehlert.:- JJ EHL
• The cat is bored of his regular food so when the door is accidentally left open, the cat sneaks out for a feathered treat, only to find that those birds can outsmart him for a few reasons!
•  Birds by Tracey Crawford. - J 598 CRA (Creature Comparisons series)
• This is actually a very simple nonfiction book that explains birds to young children.
•  An Egg is Quiet  by Diana Aston ; illustrated by Sylvia Long. - J 594.4 AST
• Do you know about eggs? In this special book, readers learn about eggs. A highlight for this one was the chance for children to find the egg in one spread (it isn't as easy as it looks)!

What We Did

• Sang my favorite opening and closing songs: "If you'd like to hear a story" and "The more we read together."
• Sang "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star."
• Recited: "I saw a little bird go hop, hop, hop..."
• Recited: "Two Little Black Birds."

The snow is gone and flowers are starting to come up! We met for Baby Story Time today with new friends and old. Here is what we read:

• A lift-the-flap book that follows a pattern and is a guessing game.
•  Busy Chickens / John Schindel and Steven Holt.: - JJ BOARD SCH
• Silly, busy chickens of all types are up to no good. Full color photos tell the story of what chickens are up to.
•  Farm by James Brown.:- JJ BOARD BRO
• A graphic designed book with a simple animal on one side and a tessellated pattern on the other.

What We Did

• Sang my favorite opening and closing songs: "If You'd Like to Hear a Story" and "The More We Read Together."  
• Recited a rhyme about "5 Clean Pigs."
• Sang "Old MacDonald Had a Farm."
• Bounced to "This is the way a baby/farmer/jockey rides"

Early Literacy Tip

• Animal sounds are a great way to practice phonological awareness. The different, short sounds animals make help baby hear the shorter sounds that are in words. In play, make the animal noises as best as you can.
